New Online Course: Hiring Summer Students

We invite our members to register for Hiring Summer Students, an online course offered by The Museum Association of Newfoundland and Labrador and sponsored by the United Way Newfoundland and Labrador’s Community Services Recovery Fund! Join us for this free three module online course, taking place weekly from June 5 to June 26, 2024, and learn about recruiting, training and supervising summer student employees.

To register, please fill out this form by Monday, June 3.

This is an elective course for the Museum Studies Certificate Program, but you do not have to be completing the certificate to take the course.

Module 1: Recruitment

Learn how to effectively plan and streamline your hiring process, build a candidate profile and write a job description. Address the importance of DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) in a workplace and learn how to foster it in your museum or heritage institution.

Module 2: Orientation and Training
Wednesday, June 19, 2024

Explore different learning styles, skills evaluation methods and leadership styles. Find out what training planning approach will work best for your institution and learn the basics of occupational health and safety.

Module 3: Supervision
Wednesday, June 26, 2024
10:30 AM – 12:00 PM NST

Learn about supervisor responsibilities, performance management and program evaluation. Discover tips on setting performance expectations, communicating with your summer student employees, and avoiding the biggest supervisor fails.
