This workshop series is suitable for anyone planning to hire seasonal staff and/or engage volunteers more effectively within their heritage organizations. Participants will learn how to develop and carry out an effective plan to recruit, hire, train, supervise, evaluate and attract the right staff and volunteers for their organizations. Occupational Health and Safety regulations, the importance of DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion), as well as supervisory management skills will be included.
This is an elective course for the Museum Studies Certificate Program, but you do not have to be completing the certificate to take the course.

Module 1: Recruitment

Learn how to effectively plan and streamline your hiring process, build a candidate profile and write a job description. Address the importance of DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) in a workplace and learn how to foster it in your museum or heritage institution.
Module 2: Orientation and Training
Date: Wednesday, March 19, 2025
Time: 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM NDT
Explore different learning styles, skills evaluation methods and leadership styles. Find out what training planning approach will work best for your institution and learn the basics of occupational health and safety.
Module 3: Supervision
Date: Wednesday, March 26, 2025
Time: 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM NDT
Learn about supervisor responsibilities, performance management and program evaluation. Discover tips on setting performance expectations, communicating with your seasonal employees and volunteers, and avoiding the biggest supervisor fails.
Workshop Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- understand the critical role effective management and supervision play in creating a healthy workplace;
- identify their own management style and how that may affect those they supervise;
- develop and carry out an effective plan to recruit, hire, train, supervise and attract staff and volunteers;
- identify and understand the rights, roles and responsibilities of employers and employees / volunteers,
- including occupational health and safety regulations;
- manage the employment/volunteer relationship through effective supervision and performance management practices
